HPV-like particle formed from L1 surface proteins, molecular model. The L1 subunit protein forms the outer protein coat (capsid) of the human papilloma virus (HPV). Here, the folded and complexed L1 proteins have formed a virus-like particle, similar to how they form the HPV capsid. HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that causes warts on the skin or genitals, and in some women can lead to cervical cancer. HPV-like particles are being studied for use as vaccines. This model is based on the HPV 16 variant of this virus.
