Baptiste Hugo (1876-1916), French case of gigantism, with a cigar and a drink, sitting next to a normal-sized man. Hugo reached a height of centimetres (7 feet inches). Extreme cases of gigantism, like this, are usually caused by pituitary gland defects causing an excess secretion of growth hormones. This photograph, which was taken in the period from the 1890s to the 1930s, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
