Maundy coins, accompanied by a regular ten pence coin to show scale. The small sterling silver coins are given to the poor by Her Majesty the Queen.

The maundy money is specially minted in silver for the Queen to give to poor people in the traditional annual ceremony. Maundy Thursday is the day before Good Friday in the Christian calendar. The name Maundy derives from the command ( in Latin 'mandate') given by Jesus "...to love one another." The modern version of the tradition requires the Queen to give purses of money to a number of poor people equal to the number of years of her life. Because so few coins are minted collectors treasure them.
