ALDRICHDirector, Astrophysical Observatory, Smithsonian Institution It has been the chief work of the Astrophysical Observatory of theSmithsonian Institution to carry out at various high-altitude stationsa long series of determinations of the solar constant, the intensity ofthe suns radiation outside our atmosphere at mean solar distance. In1942 the Observatory published in volume 6 of its Annals an exten-sive summary (table 24) of all solar-constant values for the period1923 through September 1939. At that time a considerable numberof good determinations scattered through the period included intable 24 were examined x for correlation with Wolfer sunspot num-bers. It was concluded that the data showed little evidence of correla-tion. This was disappointing, since both solar
