Acropolis, illustration. This ancient citadel was built in the 5th century BC in Athens in Greece. The large temple at top is the Parthenon (447-438 BC), dedicated to the Ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. A statue of Athena Promachos is at centre. At the top of the stairs at lower right is the monumental gateway, the Propylaea. At upper left is the Erechtheion, a temple to Athena and Poseidon. At lower right is a small temple to Athena Nike. At centre right is the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia. At centre left is the Arrephorion. Behind the Parthenon are smaller temples, the Sanctuary of Zeus Polieus (left) and the Sanctuary of Pandion (right).
