A Prehistoric Punch dinner, 1899
Cartoon from an original Punch almanack of 1899 By Edward Tennyson Reed (1860-1933). Creator of prehistoric peeps, a probable forerunner of the Flintstones. Those looking for an explanation of the sometimes lengthy and convoluted titles & subtitles of Punch cartoons need look no further than the legendary weekly dinner at which they were discussed. Everyone chipped in with ideas & doubtless as more drink was consumed ideas that seemed funny to the intoxicated didn't quite transfer to the printed page. E T Read's satirical take here is sadly not labelled with the names of those involved. The figure farthest right at the head of the table looks like Francis Cowley Burnand, which would fit as he was the editor at the time. To the left of him wielding an axe looks like cartoonist John Tenniel. The man in the mouth of the monster smoking looks like the cartoonist Phil May. Amongst others I would assume would be present in 1899 would be Leonard Raven-Hill, Edward Linley Sambourne, Bernard Partridge & Joseph Swain.
