He began to study the pianoforte when he was fouryears old, j^et as a boy he was so interested in chemistrj^ and electricitythat Galileo Ferraris wished him to devote himself to science. On theadvice of Martucci he turned at the age of twelve his attention whollyto music. (When he was ten he played in pubhc.) He studied harmonywith Cravero. The Parisian pianist Diemer heard him in Paris and in1896 induced him to enter the Paris Conservatory. Casella took a firstprize for pianoforte-playing in 1899; in 1901 as a pupil of Leroux a sec-ond prize for harmony. He made further studies in composition withGabriel Faure.
