Rheumatoid arthritis. Coloured bilateral frontal X-rays of the hands of a 75-year-old patient with rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the joints. Chronic inflammation leads to the destruction of the cartilage, bone and ligaments, which causes the joints to deform. The tips of the first two fingers of the hand at right are bent due to the effects of this condition, which has affected the distal (outermost) inter-phalangeal joint on this hand. The patient has a ring (white) on the third finger of the other hand.
