Grey sky view from bay ferry to historic Festival Pavilion and Fort Mason Centre Buildings D, E, Lower Fort Mason, San Francisco
An Information board, at the entrance to Fort Mason at Bay Street and Van Ness Avenue, is entitled 'Fort Mason Historic District: US Army post (1864-1966)' and reads: 'First fortified by the Spanish in 1797. this bluff above the bay was re-armed by the US Army in 1864. The post remained active through the Civil War, western Indian Wars, and conflicts abroad, beginning with the Spanish-American War in 1898. During World War 2, Fort Mason was the Army's logistics center for sending troops and supplies to the Pacific. Fort Mason was designated a National Historic Landmark on February 4, 1985.' 19th century military strategists believed the overlapping range of fire from gun emplacements at Black Point (Fort Mason), Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, Fort Point and Fort Baker would repel enemy ships that tried to enter San Francisco Bay, long considered the most important harbour on the West Coast of North America. The waterfront piers and warehouses of Lower Fort Mason, seen here and now part of the Fort Mason Centre, were built 1908-1912 to warehouse army supplies and provide docking space for army transport ships. With these new facilities, including a railway tunnel driven under Upper Fort Mason to connect with the railroad network along the Embarcadero to the east, a harbour defence post changed into a logistical and transport hub for American military operations in the Pacific.
