Transcription: Natchez Mississippi May the 10th 1864 Dear Sister Your kind and welcom letter of April 8th arived here on the 7th of may it was Received and perused with Pleasure But being very Busy Just at the time I Could not write in Reply to it untill the present time But it is Better late than never I was happy to hear that you was all well But very sorry to hear that the prospects for farmers was So poor the Spring is very Differen in Illinoys[Illinois] to what it is here it has Been very Dry and Dusty here the hole Spring and Still Remains So and it is geting very warn here now But the citazens Say that it has Bee the coolest Spring that has Been for many years now is the pretyest time in the year Here and all kinds of vegitables is Ready for use Here and all kinds of Shrubry is in Bloom the perfume from the Rich flours they have here is far Superior to any thing in our country Oh if you only had time to take a pleasure trip, in the South is the place to take it, and the winter and Spring is the time for it if there is any thing Bewtiful in the world it is Some of these Rich planters Doreyards and gardens from the first of march on through the Summer But I have sayd enough a Bout pleasure You Spoke of there Being Hard fiting in the South Some where But I think it come prety near evry where in the Sothern Confederacy But the hardest I have heard of was up Read River[River Red] in Louisiana I was not there But I have Saw a great many officers that was there and from there Reports our loss is full as Bad as the papers State it But the 77th is not cut up So Bad as you State in your letter there was four or five killed in it and that is all and the 129th was not there for I got a letter from John Haley this morning Dated April the 26th Stating they was at Lookout Valley and was expecting to have a fight soon for Johnson was mooving on there flank But you have
