United States flags unfurl in the wind at the Alaska Territorial Guard Memorial Park in Bethel, Alaska, Sept. 23, 2017. Known as the Eskimo Scouts, the military reserve force stood watch on the shores of western Alaska during World War II in response to occupation of the Aleutian Islands. Many of the 6,368 ATG volunteers were never paid or recognized for their service. The memorial honors ATG members from 31 Yukon Kuskowim Delta villages. ( Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt.
