The early 1900s caption reads: "King William proclaimed emperor at Versailles. It was while the German troops were still besieging Paris that the union of their country became an accomplished fact. King William of Prussia, unanimously chosen as its ruler, was proclaimed emperor, not at Berlin, but at Versailles, the captured palace of the French kings, in the famous ‘hall of mirrors,’ built by Louis XIV. Around the new emperor were gathered, not men of peace, but warriors and princes, Bismarck the Iron Chancellor, and Moltke the greatest commander of the age."
