Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, UK: when China came to Huddersfield … pupils and teachers of the ‘Chinese Girls’ School’ in the West Yorkshire town - plus a local clergyman - captured in December 1912 wearing exotic oriental costume for a monochrome group photograph published as a vintage postcard by photographers J E Shaw & Son. The girls, from under-10s to late teenagers, sit or stand in three rows, wearing decorative long silky patterned dresses, cheongsams or mandarin gowns with mandarin hats, as does the schoolmistress sitting in the centre of the middle row. Behind them stand a soberly-dressed clergymen in a dark three-piece suit and dog-collar, with a fob watch and chain, and another man, presumably a male teacher, in a dark three-piece suit and white collar shirt and tie. Both of the men have walrus moustaches, typical of the Edwardian era before the 1914-18 First World War. The school is not named, but according to the postcard caption, it was in Huddersfield High Street. J E Shaw & Son, founded in 1877, was named after its founder, John Edward Shaw (). It traded from studios in Huddersfield and Sheffield and closed in 1917 on the death of Charles Raven Shaw, John’s son, who had tried to continue the business after his father’s death.
