It is not colored green, because it is notlowland, yet it is level like lowland. We call sucli stretches ofhigh and almost level slopes tablelands or plateaus. We have in New York city wdiat we call a plateau. It is reallynot one, but from it you can get a very good idea of w^hat atableland looks like. You can reach this plateau by climbing thestairs in Morningside Park. The new Cathedral and St. LukesHospital are on this plateau. Tablelands are, however, much higherthan this. Look again at the mountain range in the eastern part of themap. You notice one river flowing northeast and another flowing A PHYSICAL MAP 29 southwest. We call tliis mountain range a divide or water parting,because the rain water falling upon one side of this range of moun-tains flows one way, and that falling on the other side flows theother way.
