Black Middens Bastle in Northumberland

The border country between England and Scotland still contains the reminders of its dangerous past when Border Reivers held sway. Fortified farmhouses called Bastles were common in the border area during the 16th and 17th century and the remains of many can still be seen. Black Middens Bastle in Northumberland is a typical example. Livestock were housed in the ground floor and the family lived on the upper floor.
