ON the 23d of November, 1783, the City of NewYork was evacuated by the last Enghsh army,and it was able to enjoy the freedom purchased by sevenyears of war and sacrifices. It was by no means alarge town. MuiTay Street was its northern limit, andthe ruins of many public and private buildings destroyedin the great fiie of 1776 still disfigured the place. Forits twenty thousand people there were nine churches fitfor use; but of these nine, the few Catholics could notclaim one. Yet they were free: the victorious armyhad its Catholic officers and soldiers; Catholic ministersof foreign countries, following the lead of La Luzerne,the envoy of France, entered the city.
