This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Sea ice reduction in the Bering Strait, satellite image. North is at top. Sea ice is light blue. The Bering Strait is a narrow sea passage, around 80 kilometres wide, between Russia (left) and Alaska (right), connecting the Pacific and Arctic oceans. In March 2019, the extent of sea ice in this strait was the lowest in both the 40-year satellite record and since written records began in 1850. This is due to warmer air and water temperatures. Image data obtained by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites in 2019. Image published in March 2019.
