Magnetic game, 19th-century artwork. Man's hand using a magnet to play a game of jackstraws. Also known as 'pick-up sticks', this game involves dropping a bundle of sticks on a surface to form a jumbled pile. The aim is then to take turns to remove the sticks one-by-one without disturbing the remaining sticks. Here, the sticks are made of a metal that allows them to be picked up using the magnet. Artwork from the 13th volume (first period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
