Briggs and Heyl's Magellan Gold Medal (1922). US physicists and engineers Lyman James Briggs (left, 1874-1963) and Paul Renno Heyl (right, 1872-1961) receiving the Magellan Gold Medal for 1927. Briggs is Assistant Director and Heyl is Chief of the Sound Section of the US National Bureau of Standards (NSB). The apparatus is the first successful experimental model of the earth inductor compass, which they developed for the Army Air Corps and for which they were awarded this medal in 1922 by the American Philosophical Society. Briggs became Director of the NSB in 1933. Photographed by Harris and Ewing on 27 May 1927.
