Emissions from a steel works in Hangdang, China
In 2008 China officially became the worlds largest emitter of C02 (greenhouse gases), largely driven by its ever increasing demand for energy most of which is met by producing electricity from coal fired power stations. Worryingly China is building a new coal fired power station every week and has huge reserves of coal, much of which is very low grade and highly polluting. Hangdang Steel works in Hangdang Northern China is one of the largest steel plants in China, fuelling Chinas huge construction boom and requiring massive quantities of coal to power its furnaces.
