In 1844 he and hisbrother Hyrum were arrested on acharge of treason in the town of Nau-voo, which they had founded and im-prisoned at Carthage. On the night ofJune 27, a mob, with the collusion ofthe militia guard, broke into the jail and shot the two men dead.
