For chartered cities as a class the excess of births over deaths ;only 4,748, or per cent, in 1915 as compared with , or cent, in 1914. For all the rest of the state, however, the the deaths by 4,301, or as much as per cent, in 1915against merely 2,406, or per cent, in 1914. The diminishing excessof births over deaths shown for chartered cities in contrast with thtgrowing excess of the same kind for the rest of the state is explained bythe fact that improvements in the completeness of birth registratorbrought about by the new law of 1915 were specially noticeable in tinsmaller cities and towns on their being first made separate registrationdistricts, these places being included in the table with that part of th(state outside chartered cities.
