If, however, the flesh con-taining living cysts is taken into the human stomach, thetape-worm. larval scolex sprouts into the mature tape-worm and the cycle of changes is complete. It occasionally happens that the eggs of tape-worms are swallowed by men,and cysticerci mav develop in various parts of the body, especially in the sub-cutaneous and intermuscular connective tissue, or in the brain or eye. Method of Infection.—The consumption of raw or imperfectly cooked. Cysticercus, or larval INTESTINAL PARASITES. 551 meat, in which the temperature has not been raised to a sufficient point to killthe eysticerci, is the source of infection for taenia. Infants and children un-liable to become infected with the beef tape-worm from the use of raw meat, sometimes recommended in intestinal troubles. When the beef is very finelyminced or when the juice only is used, the beef being thoroughly pressedand strained, this danger is removed. The consumption of raw sausages isa more common cause of the pork tape-worm among continental nationsthan in this country; here the beef tape-worm is probably more commonlymet with. Children, from their uncleanly habits and their custom of sucking thefingers, are more exposed to the danger of swallowing the ova and developingcysticerci. Symptoms.—The symptoms caused by tape-worms in the intestine are asobscure as those of round-worms, and, as with these parasites, are of
