In 1296, King Edward I invaded Scotland, beginning the Wars of Scottish Independence, which lasted for the next 60 years. During that time the castle played host to William Wallace after the Battle of Stirling Bridge(1297) and Robert the Bruce, who besieged the castle in 1299.
