In the summer of1840, in company with his friend and former roommate at the University,General Alonzo Jackman, he began the publication of the Citizen Soldier, inNorwich,Vt. The enterprise did not prove a success and in the spring of 1841they discontinued the paper, and in August they resigned their professorshipsat the University. They soon established the New England Seminary atWindsor, which they conducted until the fall of 1844, when they both returnedto their former positions at the University. In August, 1845, he resigned hisprofessorship and became principal of the Claremont Seminary which positionhe held until 1847. He took great interest in thewelfare of his alma mater; served as trastee, 1857-88; was secretary of theboard, 1862-76; acting president, August 12, 1875-October 19, 1876; receivedthe degree of D. D. from the University in 1864. He met with marked success as a clergyman and was greatly respected andbeloved, not only by the members of his church, but also by the people of thecommunities where he lived; was president of the Standing Committee of theDiocese for twenty-five years and was for several years Dean of
