Pancreatitis. Light micrograph of fat necrosis in a case of pancreatitis. The central area here is fat that has turned necrotic (the tissue has died). Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas. The disease is caused by digestive enzymes that become activated before they leave the pancreas and start to digest it. The fat is broken down and the tissue turns necrotic.
