The memorial was designed by the Wanganui architectural firm, Walpole & Patterson, and the Italian marble statue is of local man, Herewini Wakarua –who is one of the seventeen men named on the memorial. The bulk of the memorial was built with shell rock quarried at Kaiwhaiki
