Andrew John Wiles (born 1953), British mathematician. Wiles was awarded his doctorate from Cambridge in 1980. He has mainly worked at Princeton University in the USA since 1981, and at the University of Oxford from 2011. His work on number theory includes his famous proof (published 1993, revised 1995) of Fermat's Last Theorem (proposed 1637). For this work, Wiles was made Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 2000. Wiles was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1989. His awards include the Wolf Prize (1995/6) and the Royal Medal (1996). Photographed in June 2010.
