Italso appears that the eastern part of the section movedmore rapidly than the western part, and that the pointof maximum velocity is in the neighborhood of hole No. is due to the fact that the glacier is not perfectlystraight, but is sweeping around a gentle curve with theconvex side to the east. A marked variation of velocityoccurs between the different periods, which seems to becaused by changes in the rate of melting due to changes. On that day it cleared off, anda reconnaissance of the glacier was made. The holeswere bored on the 18th, and between that date and the20th, when the first measurement was made, the weathercontinued fine though cool. Professor A. G. McAdie,of the U. S. Weather Bureau, noted a mean temperatureof 550 F. on the glacier during the day of the 18th, andthe following day was a trifle warmer. The 20th and21st were warm, clear days, with the temperature onthe glacier averaging 700 to 750 F. at noon, and witha strong wind blowing from the north. From the 22dto the 26th, the days were cool and clear (about 6o° F.),while from the 26th to the 28th the weather was stormy,with rain much of the time.
