Prevotella bacteria, illustration. These bacteria are naturally present in human intestines and the rest of the gastrointestinal tract, including the mouth. Like other non-pathogenic intestinal bacteria, they ensure the proper functioning of the body without causing disease. Specific diets favour certain bacteria. Prevotella bacteria flourish in a diet high in cakes and sweet treats. Some Prevotella species help cause tooth decay.
