Medieval Pevensey Castle built within the Roman Fort of Anderita or Anderida, which is only one of two Roman Saxon-shore forts to survive relatively intact. William the Conqueror landed at Pevensey on 28th September 1066 and gave the site to his half brother Robert de Montain who built the medieval castle around 1100
