High magnification light micrograph showing heart myocytes longitudinally sectioned. The cross-striation of the myofibrils, the central position of the nucleus and the intercalated discs at the junctions between myocytes are clearly show. Near the centre of the image there is a short extension of a myocyte. The small elongated and dark nuclei between the myocytes are fibroblasts or endothelial cells of the blood vessels. Magnification: x900 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
