Its streets, which are forty in number, exclusive of the suburbs, are less narrow and crooked than in most towns of France; and the houses are, for the most part, built of a white stone, which, though not durable, has a fine appearance. The town was formerly surrounded by a high wall, of which there are now scarcely any remains. Caen contains in all twelve parish churches, with several inhabitants manufacture quantities of linen, serges, lace, stockings, and caps. In these commodities, as well as in eider, dye stuffs, skins, and in the cattle and horses reared in the surrounding country, an active trade is still carried on. The population is about 40,000'.
