Levothyroxine tablets in packaging. This drug is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. It is used to treat hypothyroidism (reduced production of thyroxine) and those with removed or damaged thyroid glands. It is also used to suppress thyroxine release in the management of cancerous thyroid nodules and goitres (swelling of the thyroid gland). Two packets (50 and 100 microgram tablets) are shown here, both generic forms of the drug, from the Actavis and Teva pharmaceutical companies. Both packets include raised Braille dots for blind patients.
