Dur-ing the day Butler was unable to keep his batteries in exposedpositions entirely manned, but between sunset and dark,when the Federal cavalrymen made their last desperateeffort, the howitzers were remanned and double-shottedwith canister. The Federals emerged from the woods astones throw from the Confederate lines, and the canistertore great holes in their lines. It was at this engagementthat General Butler lost his leg.
