This photo was taken of Lewis Powell, or "Payne," was taken shortly before he was hanged on July 7, 1865, for conspiring against President Lincoln's life. On the night of April 14, 1865, the day Booth assassinated Lincoln, Payne had attempted to take the like of William H. Seward, Secretary of State. Besides, Booth, and Powell, another conspirator, George Atzerodt, was to take the life of Vice-president Andrew Johnson.
