Hallux valgus. Inward-turning toes on a woman's foot. This deformity, called hallux valgus, is often caused by wearing ill-fitting shoes such as pointed high-heels. The pressure of the shoes against the toe joint can also lead to the formation of a bunion, in which a fluid-filled pad develops over the inflamed toe joint. In the case of a bunion being large enough to impair toe movement, surgery may be required to straighten the joint. For the same foot after corrective surgery, see image M332/056.
