Austins plan for giving lands to the colonists,which was approved by the governor, was to give six hundredand forty acres to each head of a family and single man overage ; three hundred and twenty acres additional for the wife ;one hundred and sixty acres for each child ; and eighty acresfor each slave. He at once explored the Guadalupe, Lavaca,Colorado, and Brazos Rivers, and was satisfied that their fertile. Mexican Women of the Lower Class. valleys—especially of the two last named—would furnish pros-perous homes for his three hundred families. He then returnedto Louisiana and circulated throughout the Mississippi Valleyprinted statements of his colonial enterprise and a descriptionof Texas and its advantages. In these circulars he distinctlystated the terms of acquiring lands in his colony. Each settlerwas required to pay twelve and a half cents per acre for his por-tion of land, and Austin was to defray all expenses of surveying,fees for titles, and charges of every kind.
