Victoria.—Work on the contract forthe French Government wooden ships isproceeding with a vim at the yards ofthe Foundation Co. here. There is agood chance that if the present rate ofconstruction keeps up the first ship willbe launched by the first week in contract is for twenty ships, andeight of them are in various stages ofconstruction. There are at present about3,000 men on the payroll of the company,and this will be increased when theplanking
