The Ramsgate lifeboat crew ready for action, particularly around the Goodwin Sans in the English Channel, circa 1881. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has provided lifeboats to lifeboat stations in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was founded in March 1824, but reorganised following the loss of the lifeboat Providence and 20 of her crew of 24 in the mouth of the river Tyne in December 1849, when the need for larger, self-righting boats became apparent.
