Traitional entry to an Uzbek home in a mahalla (neighborhood). Kokand, Uzbekistan.

Traditional Uzbek homes are more like compounds. Members of the household and visitors enter through a plain-fronted wall into a courtyard surrounded by the house or connected rooms. The front gate is large for cars (and previously, carts) to enter. Doors allow people to get in and out easily. Kokand, Uzbekistasn.
