Witchcraft treatise, 15th century. Illustration of a female figure with a bow and arrow challenging a man with a boot removed from his right foot. Limb deformities and other congenital defects such as extra toes, were often interpreted as signs of witchcraft in the Middle Ages in Europe. This illustration is from the witchcraft treatise 'De Lamiis et Pythonicis Mulieribus' (1489) by German scholar Ulrich Molitor.
