There are street cars trundling in everythoroughfare, the musical horns of the conductor beingheard long past midnight and in the earliest hours of themorning. Handsome carriages and cabs are in thestreets. The wide sidewalks are thronged with a busy,energetic, and thrifty population. There is a wide-awake and prosperous air about the town, that remindsone strongly of Boston, to which it bears a markedresemblance in topographical features and compactnessof construction. But Montevideo is European ratherthan American in its aspects and customs. It is amodern Spanish town, with glimpses of Italian archi-tecture and French refinement of taste, and with thecommercial bustle and movement of Bremen or Ham-burg.
