Aerial photograph of sea ice breaking up in Laubeuf Fjord, Antarctica showing the varied & intricate patterns as it breaks into floes. As the summer advances the fast ice becomes waterlogged & honeycombed with meltpools on the surface. As it deteriorates, cracks appear & eventually huge areas may be rapidly carried out to sea by the wind. Sea ice in enclosed bays & fjords remains longer into the summer months than the ice on exposed coasts.
