First light at dawn Christmas day highlights rich colours of gritstone outcrops in snow at Robin Hood's Stride, Peak District

The first rays of the sun on Christmas Day capture the warm tones of the gritstone outcrop at the foot of Robin Hood's Stride, White Peak, Peak District National Park. The strength of the well-lit boulder contrasts with light flecks across a snow covering to give texture to the foreground which is echoed in the partially lit fieldscape of the middle distance. A careful composition gives great strength in the rocks of the foreground, subtlety in the use of early morming light to pick out detail across the image and a rich and carefully exposed clear blue sky. The image shows the great views from the rock outcrop with the promise of good walking in the moors, dales and forests in the remainder of the national park on the horizon.
