Repeated shocks of earth-quakes partially destroyed most ofthe important buildings to shape-less mounds, and the ravages oftime have covered the remainderwith vegetation. Viewing thisscene of desolation, the ruinedgateways, age-blackened walls,staircases and galleries drippingwith water and covered with moss,gives the keen observer some ideaof its ancient grandeur. Here andthere solitary pa\ ilions withquaintly-curved gables seem thesole survivors of this once-pictur-esque A Native Woman, Djocja. A walk through the native streets will prove of interest, as Djocja isthe centre of the sarong industry and manufactures this garment inimmense numbers and designs. The sarong is the native dress and mayvary in price from half-a-guilder to /loo or more, according to qualityor pattern. A permanent exhibition of native crafts and arts is establishedin the town, and one may watch the makiijg of gold and silver ornaments,krisses, wood carving, etc., and artistic work of every description bynatives with their primitive tools and crude methods. The native kampongs are next visited and-are very interesting. Thesmall huts, roofed with red tiles or thatched with leaves and sides 5
