Goose barnacles (Lepas sp.) on a washed up tree trunk. These marine crustaceans attach themselves to a rock or other substrate as adults. The front part of the head is fixed to the rock, whilst the rest of the head and the body are encased in two hard calcareous shells (grey), which can be opened and closed. Each barnacle possesses six flexible legs which it extends out of the shell in order to catch its plankton food.
