Coronary angioplasty surgery. Surgeon performing an angioplasty on a patient's coronary artery. Angioplasty is a technique used to mechanically widen a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel. Here the surgeon is placing a stent (wire mesh tube) on a balloon catheter. The catheter is used to guide the stent into place in the artery. Once in place the balloon is inflated to expand the stent and open the blood vessel. The balloon is then deflated and removed.
