Agood example of the change can be seen just beyond thepoint where the Brighton and Ditchling road crosses theboundary dividing Patcham and Stanmer the cultivation ends abruptly on the East side ofthe road, and the old turf beyond shows a wide series ofparallel tracks, one of which is the present macadamisedroad. The others are cut off abruptly by the cultivationimmediately to the South of the parish boundary, theland having been ploughed close up to the hard roadsince that was constructed.
