Carystus (Kdpvaros : Kapvanrios : Karysto orCastel Rosso), a town on the S. coast of Euboea,at the foot of Mount Oche, founded by Dryopes ;called, according to tradition, after Carystus,son of Chiron. Datis and Artaphernes landedhere in 490. In the neighbourhood was ex-cellent marble (Cipolino), which was exportedin large quantities; and the mineral calledAsbestos was also found here.
